[ARCHIVED] Mayor Harold Miller to Draw National Theme for “Success In Unity” Ornament at Festival of Nations

Mayor Harold Miller to Draw National Theme for “Success In Unity” Ornament at Festival of Nations

Mayor Harold Miller will announce the nationality to be represented on the 2018 Success In Unity Christmas Ornament Saturday, March 17, 2018, during the 10th Annual Festival of Nations. The keepsake will be the second in a series of ornaments that will highlight the city’s diverse heritage.

The Weirton Renaissance Corp. introduced the Success In Unity Ornament Series last Christmas to mark Weirton’s 70th Anniversary as a city. The first commemorative ornament featured a map of the city surrounded by more than a dozen different flags.

“Families from all over the world settled here to create Weirton,” said Mayor Miller, chair of Renaissance Weirton. “We join the Festival of Nations in celebrating that diverse heritage, which makes our young city truly unique.”

The nationality to be featured on this year’s ornament will be chosen by a drawing during the Festival of Nations, which will run from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Millsop Community Center. After the announcement, volunteers from Renaissance Weirton will work with members of the selected ethnic community to design the 2018 ornament.

Renaissance Weirton will unveil the 2018 ornament in early November, along with ordering information. Ordered keepsakes will be available for pick up as part of the Third Annual North End Christmas Tree Lighting, set for Saturday, November 17, 2018.

Half of the proceeds from the sale of the ornament will go to a local non-profit organization selected by members of the ornament committee. The remaining half will go to Renaissance Weirton for the Success In Unity Ornament Series project.

The series, which honors the many cultures that formed our foundation and continue to make up the fabric of the Weirton Community, was created by the Weirton Renaissance Committee. The 2017 ornaments cost $10 each, with the design sponsored by Felici Insurance.

“Last year, half of the proceeds went to the Striplight Community Theatre,” said Alecia Ford, Renaissance Weirton Board member. “We were proud to be able to help keep quality live theatre in downtown Weirton.”
