City of Weirton Reminds Property Owners of Responsibility to Clear Sidewalks
Revised – February 6, 2026
WEIRTON, WV – The City of Weirton is reminding all homeowners and business owners that, under City Code § 905.06, property owners are responsible for keeping sidewalks adjacent to their property clear of snow, ice, and other obstructions.
City Code § 905.06 – Duty of Owner to Keep Sidewalks Clean – requires that the owner of property abutting any street maintain the sidewalk in a clean and sanitary condition and free from snow, ice, dirt, or refuse.
If a property owner fails to clear the sidewalk within 24 hours after notice has been given, the City Manager may arrange for the sidewalk to be cleared. The cost of this work will then be assessed to the property owner, as provided for under City Code. Penalties for noncompliance are addressed in § 905.99.
Keeping sidewalks clear is critical for pedestrian safety, particularly for seniors, children, and individuals with mobility challenges. Snow and ice covered sidewalks increase the risk of slips, falls, and injuries, and can limit safe access throughout the community.
Considering the remarkable amount of snow and exceptionally frigid temperatures, pedestrians are urged to be prudent, patient, and willing to utilize public transportation services, such as Weirton Ride when possible. Pedestrians are to avoid walking in motor vehicle traffic at all times. Information on Weirton Ride can be found by visiting www.weirtonride.org or by calling 304-797-8500, Ext. 1023.
The City appreciates the cooperation of residents and businesses helping to keep Weirton safe and accessible during winter weather. Questions regarding sidewalk maintenance requirements may be directed to the City of Weirton Code Enforcement Department at 304-797-8500, Ext. 1005.
