The VFW Post 4442 in Elm Grove, WV started the “Purple Heart Parking Project,” in 2022 with the purpose of honoring our Nation’s veterans who were awarded the Purple Heart Medal by dedicating ceremonial reserved parking spaces at businesses for the combat warriors.
In November 2023, the City of Weirton continued the project by dedicating the ceremonial parking spaces at the Weirton Municipal Building and at the Millsop Community Center for Purple Heart Medal recipients.
To continue the honoring of Purple Heart Medal recipients, American Legion Post 10 of Weirton, WV agreed to work with the City of Weirton to establish the ceremonial parking spaces throughout Weirton and Hancock and Brooke Counties.
Hancock County Savings Bank, having heard of the opportunity to honor our Nation’s Combat Warriors with reserved parking spaces, contacted the City requesting to have a space placed at their Weirton branch. A dedication ceremony of the parking space took place on April 26, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Hancock County Savings Bank branch located at 375 Three Springs Drive, Weirton, WV 26062.
