Mark Glyptis

Mark Glyptis, who was born on May 14, 1951, is a prominent labor leader and lifelong resident of Weirton, West Virginia. He serves as the President of United Steelworkers Local 2911, a position he has held from 1991 to present. His leadership has been instrumental in navigating the challenges faced by the local steel industry, including plant closures, foreign competition, and economic transitions. He has dedicated his career to advocating for steelworkers and supporting his community. His efforts have spanned workplace safety, economic revitalization, and community engagement. 


Mark began his career at the former Weirton Steel Corporation in 1973, becoming the third generation in his family to work at the mill. During his tenure, he achieved the position of journeyman rigger. Over the years, he has been a steadfast advocate for steelworkers, emphasizing the importance of workplace safety and community engagement. Reflecting on past decades, he acknowledged that safety wasn't always a priority, leading to numerous workplace fatalities. Under his leadership, there has been a concerted effort to prioritize safety, ensuring that the well-being of workers remains paramount. 


He has also been actively involved in efforts to revitalize the local economy, including initiatives to repurpose former steel facilities for new manufacturing ventures. Recognizing the challenges faced by the steel industry, Mark has actively participated in initiatives aimed at economic revitalization. He supported the establishment of new industries. His advocacy emphasizes the need for sustainable employment opportunities to replace lost steel jobs. 


In addition to his Union leadership, Mr. Glyptis has participated in national discussions on trade policies affecting the steel industry. He has testified before the U.S. International Trade Commission, highlighting the impact of imported steel products on domestic manufacturing and advocating for measures to protect American jobs.


Beyond his Union responsibilities, Mark has demonstrated a commitment to community development. He has contributed to local charities and supported many projects that benefit the broader community. Through these multifaceted efforts, Mark has shown enduring commitment to the community of Weirton. His proactive approach to industry challenges has made him a respected member of both local and national labor circles. 


Mr. Glyptis resides in Oakdale, Pennsylvania with his wife Jane. They have a daughter, Elizabeth.
