At a January 2019 Weirton Area Reuse Plan meeting the City of Weirton, BDC and Frontier Group of Companies discussed a potential residential component with Frontier at the North end of town. The same residential discussions have been occurring ever since with various property owners throughout the city. Through the 2018 Comprehensive Plan Update and conversations with realtors and current business owners, we are in need of rentals, multi-family units, and single-family homes in various price ranges. As redevelopment efforts continue and the city begins to grow again, bringing in business and workers, we need to consider where they will live. We certainly want them here in Weirton.
The City of Weirton’s Planning & Development Department (City) issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for a Housing Study and Needs Assessment in February 2019. Due to COVID and other unforeseen issues, the project was put on hold. Housing is a top priority for the City of Weirton, and we rebooted the study, completing it in March of 2024.
The Housing Study focused on providing the following information for developers, investors, and realtors:
1) Identifying existing and future housing stock within the community.
2) Assessing the existing housing conditions.
3) Identifying critical housing gaps and issues.
4) Identifying current and future demographic and market demands.
