The City of Weirton’s Youth Council (WYC) provides our youth a means of communication directly to the Mayor and City Council to learn about City policies, procedures, and governmental workings. This Council provides an opportunity to advise the Mayor and City Council on issues and concerns facing our youth today. Weirton Youth Council efforts are designed to engage our youth in civic and community initiatives that contribute to our thriving city. Students will have opportunities to develop their leadership skills through community engagement activities and to advocate for youth in community matters.
The WYC is comprised of students from 7th, 8th, and 9th grades who live in Weirton, including public, private, and home schools. Regularly scheduled meetings of the Weirton Youth Council are held once monthly, with additional meetings and volunteer activity opportunities to be offered at a later date. The WYC will participate in community service projects, receive hands-on learning of the operations of various City departments, and have the opportunity to voice youth-related concerns. Meeting days and times are subject to change. Participants are required to attend three Regular Council meetings during their term on the WYC. Transportation arrangements to and from the meetings are the responsibility of the student/guardian.
