Reflections on 2018: Serving Up Improvements at Starvaggi Park

At Starvaggi Park, a collaborative effort between city departments has resulted in resurfacing for 3 tennis courts and 2 basketball courts.

It was a $315,000 project, according to Park Board Executive Director Coty Shingle. $100,000 of that amount came from the J.C. Williams Foundation, and another $50,000 came from a special award from the City of Weirton. The rest of the project was covered by the Park Board’s budget.

Aside from the resurfacing, this project also brought new backboards and rims to the basketball courts and new nets and net systems for the tennis courts. All 5 courts also received a new state-of-the-art lighting system and new fencing around the perimeter. New sidewalks were installed along the front of the courts, as well as a new utility shed and new benches.

The Park Board also received help from the Public Works Department, who helped demolish old parts of the courts and also helped finish the sidewalk. Starvaggi Industries also provided the concrete to the Park Board at cost.
